IVF: Is It The Right Fertility Treatment For You?

IVF (short for in vitro fertilisation) can be a priceless blessing for those who might not otherwise be able to have a baby.

Originally developed for women who had blocked tubes or missing fallopian tubes, it's still the procedure of choice for these situations. It is also used when there are other issues causing or contributing to conception problems, including endometriosis, male factor infertility, and unexplained infertility in which no medical cause for infertility can be found.

Increased incidence of gynaecological conditions as women age, such as fibroids or pelvic inflammatory disease can also impair fertility. Sometimes by the time these are properly diagnosed, the damage has already been done to the reproductive system. This can create a wide range of difficulties for you in getting pregnant and delivering a healthy baby.

Age can also create infertility problems. Unfortunately, fertility in women declines with age. Increasingly, many women are delaying having a baby, due to a variety of reasons, until their late 30s and 40s.  In the general population, the chances of becoming pregnant with your own eggs, after the age of 40 years is estimated to be 5% per menstrual month, compared to 20% per menstrual cycle for women younger than 40 years.

If you have (or suspect you might have) a fertility problem because of  medical issues, IVF may be an option that will enable you to still have a baby. Please get in touch for more info or to make an appointment with Dr Davidson.
